Hijabi Quinn Cosplay

Our company loves to celebrate diversity in all it's forms. Regardless of color, culture, shape, gender, alien or human, we believe including all when recognizing the heroes in our world. It's especially important considering the current political tensions around immigration and the Muslim community. On Saturday, we posted to Instagram this Harley Quinn cosplayer who beautifully integrated her hijabi (head covering) into her costume. We felt this was a wonderful example of how pop culture can bring two very different cultures together. However, while there were many complimentary comments, there were still many hateful ones that have posted over the past couple of days. Sadly, there have been about a dozen comments making reference to her being a suicide bomber, disapproval of Muslims and other racial slurs. Normally on our Instagram, we allow for opposing views to be posted- but in this case, we did not want hate to have a platform so these comments were deleted.

We understand that when cultures collide, it can produce a lot of pain and discomfort. We have seen it in our world many times over, especially in the past couple of months. However, fandom gives us an opportunity to set aside our differences and to meet on common ground. We should be able to share a common love for a character like Harley Quinn and embrace a different interpretation. Inclusion is what makes being a nerd or geek so special. We all know what it is like to be on the outside and this is our chance to make it right. Hero Within will continue to advocate and defend those that are the misfits, marginalized and misunderstood within our society. We won't let hate win and we will be intolerant to intolerance. We won't let bullies or the privileged dictate what we should love or celebrate. Our hope is that you will join us in this fight- together we can utilize pop culture to inspire and change the world for the better.

Bravo, Heroes! And let’s be clear: Free Speech does NOT INCLUDE HATE SPEECH IN ANY FORM! For HATE SPEECH is the OPPOSITE of FREEDOM in ANY FORM! It isvthe Denial of the Rights of Some & THEREFORE IT IS THE PROMOTION FOR THE DENIAL OF ITS OWN SELF FOR, IF WE ARE TO BE FAIR & JUST & ON EQUAL GROUNDS WE ALL PEOPLE ALWAYS, WE MUST ALWAYS APPLY OUR ACTIONS AGAINST THE MOST POORLY TREATED BY US AGAINST OUR OWN SELVES FIRST! THUS PROVING OUR ACTIONS ARE ABOVE BIAS & REPROACH! AND IF WE ARE EITHER UNWILLING TO BE TREATED THUS OR IF SUCH TREATMENT SILENCES OR DESTROYS US THEN SO BE IT! FOR IT SO PROVES OUR PLANNED ACTIONS, OUR PLANNED TREATMENT, OUR PLANNED SPEECH WAS UNJUST! IT WAS INHUMANE! AND IT HAS NO PLACE IN OUR SOCIETY, OUR POLITICS, OUR NATION, OR OUR WORLD AND THUS, IN THE NAME OF UNIVERSAL LOVE, FREEDOM, & HARMONY AMONG ALL PEOPLE, HATRED MUST BE WIPED OUT, DELETED, & EXPUNGED FROM OUR WAYS OF LIFE! BTW: if you have nothing better to do with your time or day than to spew hate or flame those sending a message of peace & taking a formal stand against hatred on their media source, then you truly need to take a step back & seriously re-assess your life. If you can read a message of Love & a stand against Hate Speech & feel the Need to post flames at it, you appear to be a sad or angry person who needs to find Hope in your dismal little life while you still have a chance to find it – for while you are alive, you do have some hope for finding joy in your obvious misery. Good luck.

Joe, If you read this post a little more thoroughly, you would see it stated that we deleted a dozen comments. The point was that we were not going to allow for hate to be published on our platform.

I looked at all the comments and saw only ONE mentioning anything about a bomb. The rest were actually pretty tame by internet standards. Seems to me you just wanted some extra attention so went on a “look how diverse we can be” bender. Shameful.
